Sunday 21st November 2010

Michael Brandon” Mitre Regional Event

Broxbourne, Hoddesdon Park Woods

EN10 7QA

FINAL DETAILS

This event is being run alongside the British Schools Championships. The Regional event courses are in an area that is not being used for the Schools event. There is a common car parking area.

Directions: Paradise Wildlife Park is signed from the M25 on brown special interest places signs. From M25: Leave the M25 at Junction 25, signed Hertford (A10). Drive north and take the 2nd exit at the roundabout after 3/4 mile. Continue north and follow the signs to Paradise Wildlife Park (http://www.pwpark.com/).

Public transport: Broxbourne Station (London Liverpool Street line to Hertford/Cambridge) – 3 miles. No buses.

Car parking: Parking for cars will be in an area to the south of the Paradise Wildlife Park Entrance (GR TL338067). Paradise Wildlife Park staff will be directing parking and collecting a £2 charge – this does not cover entry to the Wildlife Park although it does allow access to cafes etc on the site.

EOD registration & download: EOD registration and download will be in the port-a-cabin just inside the car park entrance.

Terrain: The area consists of a combination of deciduous and coniferous woodland with gentle contours. Runnability should be regarded as indicative – recent partial die-back of bracken resulting in good visibility and making the forest faster than it may appear – and it is not recommended that vegetation boundaries be used for fine navigation except where mapped as distinct vegetation boundaries. Care should also be given to how the earthwalls and ditches scattered over the area are mapped. It is likely to be reasonably wet underfoot, while leaf fall over the past few weeks has made some paths hard to spot.

Safety: None of the courses cross roads. The busiest road to be crossed is from the car park into the Paradise Wildlife Park entrance to get to the start – this will be marshalled. There is a minor road to cross after leaving the back gate of the park. This will not be marshalled – please exercise care when crossing. There is also a short section of the route from the finish back to the car park that uses a narrow verge for 100 metres by the minor road. Please be considerate to other forest users including cyclists, walkers and horse riders – do not appear suddenly in front of a horse! There is a first aid post in the Paradise Wildlife Park. If you require first aid please contact marshals at the start. Dogs welcome if under control.

Facilities: Toilets available in the car park – shared with the British Schools event. Café and Indoor toilets at the Wildlife Park. Local Senior Section Girlguides will also be running a tuck shop (sweets) plus a stall selling hot and cold drinks and homemade cakes in the car park. First aid point in the Wild Life Park. Clothing dump close to the start.

Start and finish: Approx 1000m walk to Start. Allow 20 – 25 minutes walk. From the car park, cross the road (marshalled) and walk through the Paradise Wildlife Park car park to the back gate. Cross a minor road and follow marks to the start. The finish is approx 1000m walk to the car park. From the finish there wil be a marked path which for 100m will be on a narrow verge of the minor road crossed on the way to the start. To return to the start and clothing dump, either follow the path back towards the car park and then follow the path to the start from where they meet, or use the map to go cross country!
