“Orienteering means maps, forests, adventure.
It doesn’t matter how young, old or fit you are.
Run, jog or walk…”

What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport that exercises your body and brain equally. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

The aim is to navigate between checkpoints marked on a special orienteering map.

There is no set route so the skill and fun come from trying to find the quickest route.

Orienteering maps are slightly different to regular maps.

They include a range of special orienteering symbols.

In terms of equipment you will need a compass, a lightweight running kit (with full leg cover for forested areas), some suitable training shoes with a good grip and a whistle (to summon help if you have a fall or injury).

Note - if you are taking part in a competitive event you will also need an electronic dibber, which you can hire.
