This is a series of 4 friendly, straightforward orienteering events in parks in Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Newham and Tower Hamlets suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced orienteers. A great way to learn orienteering or improve the skills you already have. Find as many controls as you can in a 45 minute time limit.
Saturday Parks League 2013
A 45 minute score course – Find as many of the approx 25 controls as you can within the time limit. You are not expected to locate them all. Most will find between 5 and 15. If you get stuck on one, just move onto the next one.
Your score will be reduced by 1 points scored for every minute or part minute late. Bonus points are available where you complete ALL controls in less than the time allowed – bonus points are 0.25 points scored for every full minute early that you finish.
After you have finished and returned your dibber, you will be given a printout showing your times between the controls. We will aim to announce the winners in various age/sex categories within 15 minutes of the finish and maybe present some prizes.
Experienced orienteers and fast runners who think they can get them all in the time limit will need to run between 5-8 km (straight line distance, actual distance will be greater).
For younger juniors (under 14) there will be a “Yellow” standard course (circa 1.9km)- 10 controls to be visited in a specified order. Under 14s may enter either the Score or Yellow courses, depending on ability.
Tent and CHIG banner will be visible from the car park, assembly area adjacent to the Golf Clubhouse & Cafe.
Cafe, toilets. Boulders for climbing and childrens play area.
Use the car park on the golf clubhouse entrance – the one nearest to Fairlop tube station. Entrance will be signed.
Fairlop tube is a short walk away (its even marked on the map!). Also local buses to Barkingside.
Mass Start: 11:15
Courses Close: 12:15
Adults £4, Juniors £1, Family/group competing together £4, Dibber Hire £1, Extra maps £1.
You do not need to pre-enter or be a member of an orienteering club, just turn up on the day, but please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are bringing a group (6 or more) so we can ensure enough maps are available.
Please visit registration between 10.30 and 11.00 to buy a map and to hire a dibber (which records your time electronically) if you don’t already have one.
Help for Newcomers
Some of CHIGs members will be on hand to offer help to newcomers to orienteering, and will be available to help you understand the map symbols and suggest some tips and techniques before you start.
The points scored at each event will count towards the league. So if you get all 25 controls you earn 25 league points. The best three events (from four) count towards the 2013 league.
