Captain’s Blog – August 2009

Summer Events, Multi-Day Internationals and family holidays all done so it is now back into a full itinerary of regular Weekend Orienteering.

For the summer I can report that after a good start at the first FROLIC in Claybury Park where we were a close 3rd, CHIG members clearly had other things planned for the summer, as we slowly slipped down the ranking to finish 8th club out of the 12 who competed. The blow by blow account can be read on London Orienteering Club’s web site by clicking on this link: http://www.londonorienteering.co.uk/frolic2009/frolic-series-cum-results.htm

However here is the total number of runners for each team. I note in our own Claybury Event and HAVOC’s Epping event we got some numbers out and total participation is increasing year on year, but we need to loose the fear of travelling to do well.

We did manage to turn out 25 CHIG members at the Scottish 6 Day event in August, the Brett’s included. Some of us were hobbling around with injuries and treating it as a pure holiday, but there were a few notable runs that stood out:-

  • Josh Jenner 3rd on Day 3 on the M21L course;
  • Oliver Brett 2nd Day 2 on the M10B course;
  • Ruby Campbell 3rd Day 4 on the W70L course; and
  • Tom Edelsten for consistent runs throughout to achieve 8th overall in the competitive M65L.

There are of course long stories behind every run and every ‘if only’ (Chig Chat could use your own story – with photos), but I am sure everyone who made the effort to travel to Perth felt they had a good week with reasonable weather in varied and complex Scottish terrain. Well worth the trip so planning next summer in either the Lake District or Switzerland muti-day event.

SE SCORE Championships – SUN 13th September

We do need a bigger turn out than those above for next week ends SE SCORE Championships in Wormley, and that is not just because I am planning it. We should have a decent number turning up just to help as it is a CHIG event, so with a few more we could do well – we could even win the event if we got a full turn out!

The top scoring 12 club members are counted – but it is a significant advantage if we also have all age groups represented. Juniors and seniors (M/W 16- and M/W 60+) have the advantage of adding 50% to their score total, so the more the better in these categories. There are some easy controls for the children and everyone should be finished within an hour!. I can assure you that the main part of the woods are delightful clear beach trees.

So come on – Support the CLUB and let’s try and win something!

Regards

Mike Brett
