Event Overview
Orienteering in the southern section of Epping Forest, London, E11. There will be courses suitable for both beginners and experienced orienteers. Any queries contact the Organiser (see above).
Registration, entries, download and car parking, as directed, will all be at The Epping Forest Hotel (30 Oak Hill, Woodford Green, IG8 9NY). Facilities here will include toilets, space to leave bags and refreshments to purchase (tea, coffee, cereal bars, etc.).
Forest orienteering event with a range of courses (“colour-coded” according to length and difficulty) which forms part of SWELL 2018-19. Courses to suit all ages from under 10’s to over 80’s. Adult beginners with a running background may prefer “Orange” or “Light Green” courses. For children under 10, “White” or “Yellow” courses will be best suited. Older juniors should enter “Orange” or “Light Green” depending on experience.
Getting to the event
Driving / cycling
North: head south along the A104 / Epping New Road and bear right at the junction with the A1199. Continue for c. 500m until you see a car showroom on your left and garage on your right before turning right onto Oak Hill. The car park and event centre will be sign-posted from here.
South: from the Waterworks junction of the A406 / North Circular, head north along the A104 / Epping New Road. The car park and event centre will be sign-posted after c. 500m at the junction with Oak Hill.
Public transport
The nearest underground station is South Woodford on the Central Line, 1.2 miles from the event centre.
Alternatively you can take the number 20 bus (Walthamstow Central-Debden) to bus stop Q Oak Hill, a c. 300m walk from the event centre.
Mapped Area
The map will extend south of the event centre, with the start and finish (within c. 50 m of one another) around 500m walk from the event centre at The Epping Forest Hotel (see above). Allow c. 5 minutes walk. Dogs welcome if under control.
The longest courses (Blue and Brown) will travel as far south as Hollow Pond. The northernmost part of the map overlaps in part with the map from our Epping Walthamstow Forest event in November 2016. The rest of the map was last used in April 2013.

Mixed deciduous woodland and forest.
Terrain
Largely flat, a mixture of open land and dense forest with an extensive path network, but with enough detail to make it a fair navigational challenge.
Entries
Entry forms will be available at the event on the day. It is possible to complete your registration form prior to the event by completing the form on the bottom of this page NOW CLOSED- although you should pay your entry fee on the day.
Courses

Brown | 8.8km | 5 – Highest | Brown Courses are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only. |
Blue | 7.2 km | 5 – Highest | Blue Courses are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers. |
Green | 5.4km | 5 – Highest | Green Courses are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty. |
Short Green | 3.8 km | 5 – Highest | Short Green Courses are used mostly by adults wanting a shorter but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty. |
Light Green | 3.9 km | 4 | Light Green Courses are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and ‘point’ features. |
Orange | 2.9 km | 3 | Orange Courses progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters. |
Yellow | 2.3 km | 2 | Yellow Courses use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups. |
White | 1.6 km | 1 – Easiest | White Courses are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups. |

EPS-SI on all courses. Dibber hire £1.00 (free hire for juniors).
Safety details
Please note that the Green, Blue and Brown courses will include road crossings, with the busier of these timed out (controls on either side of pedestrian crossing). For the other crossing, a control will be situated near to the pedestrian crossing. All roads are marked as out of bounds other than at specified crossing points and competitors are urged to take care at these crossings.
Full leg cover is strongly advised. First aid cover will be available from the event centre while the nearest Accident & Emergency department is at Whipps Cross Hospital, E11 1NR.
Competitors are urged to show courtesy to other forest users.
Results
We will aim to have results published on the web (www.chig.org.uk) as soon as possible after the event.
