Please Find initial details for the 1st EVER Wanstead flats orienteering event – in fact only the longer courses (Green plus) go onto the flats, the shorter courses start and finish in Wanstead Park. Note – safe car parking so encourage those Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Guides and schools groups to attend, but tell us beforehand so we have the maps!

Orienteering Event – Wanstead Park & Wanstead Flats

Orienteering in the furthest south section of Epping Forest, London, E12. There will be courses suitable for both beginners and experienced orienteers.

TERRAIN
Flat, a mixture of open land and dense forest with an extensive path network. The longer courses will combine traditional and park orienteering.

DIRECTIONS
The event will be signed from Aldersbrook Road by the ESSO Garage. Aldersbrook Road runs between Romford Road (A118) and the Green Man Roundabout on the A12. From A12 leave at the Green Man roundabout in Leytonstone. Take the Leytonstone High Road turning, and turn left at lights after 50 metres onto Bush Road, signposted Forest Gate. After half a mile turn right at the traffic lights onto Blake Hall Road. After half a mile turn left at mini Roundabout onto Aldersbrook Road. Turn Left opposite the Esso Garage. (The event will be signposted from here), and then bear left again onto Ingatestone Road to the car parking.
CAR PARKING
Aldersbrook Primary School Play Area. Car Park £2 donated to the Parent’s Association.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
  • Wanstead (Central Line) 1.4 miles
  • Leytonstone (Central Line) 1.7 miles
  • Manor Park (National Rail) 1.1 miles (cycles may be taken on this line, connects from Stratford & Liverpool St)
  • Woodgrange Park (Overground) is closed due to engineering works.

Please check for train running information before you travel in case of engineering works.

EVENT ENTRY & REGISTRATION
Registration will be situated at Aldersbrook Primary School, located between Ingatstone and Harpendon Roads.Simply complete a registration form on the day and pay your entry fee. The registration desk will be clearly identified from the car parking area.

  • Registration: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
  • Starts: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
  • Courses close: 2:00 pm
FACILITIES
There will be tea, coffee and cake for sale, courtesy of Aldersbrook School Parents’ Association.The nearest toilets are at “The Temple” in Wanstead Park and will be shown on map at registration.
EQUIPMENT & OTHER ESSENTIALS
A compass is useful, but not essential on beginners courses.
ELECTRONIC TIMING
Electronic Punching (EPS SI) will be used at the event. These can be hired – seniors £1.00, juniors free. Instruction will be available for beginniers
SAFETY
The longer course cross several moderately busy roads without manned crossing points, so competitors are asked to use caution. Please be considerate of other forest users including cyclists, horse riders and members of the general public. The whole area is popular with dog walkers.You must report to “download” at the registration point even if you do not finish the course. Competitors take part at their own risk.

Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event but any mess must be cleared up, and they must be kept under control at all times.
